It was in 1997 when a twenty five year old Chris Carlson started having strange attacks characterized by piercing, burning pain in the upper part of her left cheek and through her face. She had high sensitivity to light of any kind. Even the faintest touch on her face or exposure to light would trigger an episode that left her in excruciating pain. She says, “Out of nowhere I just had this lightning bolt of piercing, burning pain. It was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever felt in my life, come into the upper part of my left cheek and just pierce straight through my face.. My face would swell up with the pain and so literally my face would constrict.”
Doctors could not find the cause for her condition. Chris had to quit her job as an engineer and distance herself from her friends because of her condition. Six years after the onset of her illness, doctors discovered that Chris had a rare, chronic pain condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). The condition affects the trigeminal nerve that carries sensation to the face and brain. It’s also known as the Suicide Disease because people just can’t get out of the pain and so they will eventually take their own life.
One day her husband, Dave, encouraged Chris to attend a healing service, even though she did not believe in the power of prayer. However a woman at her church did, and it was through her faith and a simple touch that the pain Chris had endured for fifteen years instantly disappeared!
