Former President George W. Bush hasn’t given a commencement speech since leaving office. But what took him out of commencement address retirement was nothing short of a little pressure from longtime friend and President of Southern Methodist University, R. Gerald Turner and First Lady Laura Bush, who was a graduate of SMU herself in 1968 and now serves as a trustee on the university board.

As he began his 15 minute long speech at the 100th Spring Commencement, the former President spoke of his desire that the graduates speak out in the public square and take part in American democracy, thereby making our country stronger.
