Denzel Washington opened his Screen Actors Guild Awards by telling the audience that he’s a man of God – but that he’s still human and gets nervous and worries about things like performing on opening night.
Washington expressed that he had no idea he would take home the statue for his role in “Fences,” which he also directed.“I’m a God fearing man. I’m supposed to have faith, but I didn’t have faith,” he said while explaining that he thought he would lose to a younger actor.
“God bless you all, all you other actors,” he told a crowd of his peers.Washington then held back tears as he dedicated his award to “the guys that don’t get recognized.” “We’re just actors,” he said.
“You know, I’m famous and all that kind of stuff,” but that doesn’t stop him from getting nervous on opening night, he said.
