For many of us, when spring arrives is when we first realize just how many pests have made our home their home over the long winter. Fortunately, we’re here with a few super simple remedies that can help – and that, as a bonus, will help your place smell good, too!

Consider the five all-natural, single ingredient remedies below!

1. Eucalyptus Essential Oil

One of the most natural insect repellents available, eucalyptus-based repellents are especially effective against mosquitoes, flies and moths. Any standard eucalyptus essential oil can be used as an insect repellent.

We recommend a ratio of 1/4 teaspoon eucalyptus oil per cup of water, used in a spray bottle. Shake well to mix, and simply spray trouble areas every three days, being sure to shake each time.

2. Lavender Oil

Most commonly used in aromatherapy, lavender oil is also a great bug repellent – especially black beetles, black flies, fleas, green flies, and white flies. In particular, we recommend lavender pillows and sachets to keep bugs away from your bed.

As far as a spray, we recommend 30-40 drops lavender oil in 1.5 ounces of water. Again, spray any trouble areas.

3. Basil Oil

Basil essential oil has the added benefit of larvicide properties, meaning it prevents insects from hatching. As far as ratios go, we recommend 20 drops basil oil in 8 ounces of water; again spray any trouble areas.

4. Citrus Oil

In particular, we recommend bergamot oil, but any sort of citrus oil can be effective – especially for flea and ant prevention.

Again, make a simple spray for trouble areas.

5. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil applications on the skin can repel bugs, as can mint tea bags dipped in water and left in trouble areas, but we especially prefer making a spray – 10-15 drops of peppermint oil in 8 ounces of water. Again, spray trouble areas.
