Jackie McGee and Charlie Womble are husband and wife, known for excelling at the state dance of South Carolina. This dance, called the shag, is mostly only known among South Carolinians who have grown up hearing about it.
Charlie has said that the dance is special because of the way you move during it, going back and forth toward your partner in an accordion sort of way, and mostly just holding on with one hand. The couple has won so many competitions, they are even in the Shaggers Hall of Fame. In this video we see them exhibiting their skills at the ShagAtlanta 2013 ACSC Summer Workshop. They move so smoothly and casually, they make it look easier than it is. Thanks to couples like Jackie and Charlie, plus other organizations, shag has been introduced to younger generations, keeping the dance alive. It’s no wonder, when they look so classy and seem to be having a lot of fun in this regional dance.
