British scientists are warning that both at-home hair coloring kits as well as dyes used at expensive salons, pose countless serious and life-threatening health risks.

In a recent study, Dr. Gago-Dominguez, of the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles, discovered a link between cancer and hair dye.

And although America’s beauty industry continues to deny the claims, a recent report released by The Daily Mail raises some serious concerns about box color dye– for both at home and professional use.

It is estimated that more than one-third of women over age 18 and about 10% of men over age 40 use some type of hair dye. But have the dangers of this common beauty regimen been overlooked by society at large? Despite hair dye’s popularity, researchers say it is ‘imperative’ that the health risk is quantified.

Standard hair dye is loaded with over 5,000 different questionably safe chemicals: ammonia, formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulphates and parabens, just to name a few. Some of which are reported to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) in animals.

Researchers have uncovered a chemical found in all permanent hair dyes called “secondary amines” that can penetrate the skin and stay on the hair for weeks, months or even years after the dye is applied. Over time, this chemical can react with tobacco smoke and exhaust fumes, and forms a highly poisonous chemicals called “N-nitrosamines” which is one of the most powerful cancer-causing compounds known to man.
