Do you usually crave food even when you’re physically full? Well, you’re not alone. Increased appetite is a big challenge for many people. It may be caused by stress, nutrient deficiency, low fiber intake and fatigue.

Increasing fiber intake is one of the easiest ways to reduce appetite and prevent overeating. But it may not be enough to control your appetite. And that’s why you need to use herbs. Some herbs balance hunger hormones and increase satiety.

Unlike weight loss pills, herbs don’t have synthetic ingredients and harmful side effects. Here are the 5 best herbs to suppress appetite.

1. Yerba mate tea

Yerba mate tea is widely consumed in South America. It contains nutrients and antioxidants which boost mental function, improve digestion, boost energy and control appetite.

This animal study found that mate tea increases feelings of fullness which consequently reduces food intake.

Another study found that participants who took yerba mate extract ate less food compared to the control group which took placebo.

2. Green tea extract

Green tea is one of the healthiest beverages, and there is evidence showing that it can suppress appetite.

A 12-week study found that taking 857 milligrams of green tea extract a day can lower ghrelin (hunger hormone) levels. The participants also lost more weight and their cholesterol levels improved.

I may note that high intake of green tea can cause, headaches, constipation and other negative side effects. But you have nothing to worry about if you drink 4 to 6 cups a day.

3. Grapefruit essential oil

Did you know that grapefruit is a fat burning food? It contains compounds which boost metabolism and regulate appetite.

Well, research also shows that grapefruit essential oil can help you suppress appetite and lose weight. The scent of grapefruit essential oil can reduce cravings and increase feelings of fullness. Expose yourself to this scent for at least 15 minutes a week.

4. Saffron

Saffron is an orange spice made from a flower called crocus sativus. It was traditionally used for medicinal and culinary purposes.

Research shows that saffron extract can reduce snacking and improve mood. It has also been proven to fight depression and emotional eating.

You can consume saffron by adding the spice to your food or take saffron extract.

5. Capsaicin

Capsaicin is a compound found in chili peppers. It’s widely known for its pain-relieving properties. But only a few know that it can promote weight loss and help manage diabetes.

In this study, researchers found that a combination of capsaicin and green tea can suppress hunger and increases feelings of satiety.

Note that some of these herbs have negative side effects, especially for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Ask for your doctor’s opinion before using them.
